BioCosmos Kenya held an Interdisciplinary Academic Forum at Karatina University on 30 April 2026, bringing together 22 faculty members from Biology, Physics, Mathematics and the Humanities for scholarly dialogue on Intelligent Design, science and questions of origins.
With an 88% attendance rate, the forum demonstrated strong faculty interest in engaging questions of complexity, information, causation and origins from diverse academic perspectives.
1.1 Advancing Interdisciplinary Dialogue
Unlike BioCosmos Kenya’s department-specific workshops, the Karatina forum was designed to bring scholars from the natural sciences and humanities together.
Participants were introduced to the work and academic programmes of BioCosmos Africa and BioCosmos Kenya, followed by discussions on Intelligent Design as an evidence-based framework for examining whether features of nature point to intelligent causation.
The forum explored key concepts including:
- Complex Specified Information;
- Irreducible Complexity;
- The Explanatory Filter;
- Abductive Reasoning; and
- Scientific approaches to design detection.
Examples drawn from biology, physics and other disciplines demonstrated how questions of information, complexity, functional integration and causation can generate interdisciplinary scientific inquiry.
The discussion also examined the distinction between micro-evolution and macro-evolution, providing participants with an opportunity to engage critically with different perspectives on biological change and origins.
1.2 A Lively Academic Exchange
The interdisciplinary nature of the forum generated particularly rich discussion. Faculty members examined the scientific basis of design detection, the interpretation of biological information, the relationship between Intelligent Design and evolutionary theory, and the boundaries between scientific, philosophical and theological inquiry.
The engagement provided a platform for open, respectful and evidence-focused academic dialogue among scholars from different disciplines.
1.3 Expanding Learning and Research Opportunities
Participants were introduced to the BioCosmos Africa online course (Track 1) and BioCosmos Kenya membership, with opportunities for continued learning, academic networking and participation in future programmes.
The BioCosmos Africa Research Fund – 2026 Call was also highlighted, encouraging faculty members to explore interdisciplinary and multi-institutional research collaboration.
1.4 Strengthening the Central Region Network
The forum marked the beginning of a new phase of BioCosmos Kenya’s activities in the Central Region under Dr. Leen Kavulavu, who had recently assumed the role of Regional Coordinator.
Dr. Kavulavu, together with Dr. Josiah Murage, committed to mobilizing faculty members at Karatina University and neighbouring institutions to participate in the BioCosmos Africa Course and explore collaborative research opportunities.
Dr. Josiah Murage also undertook to support the organization of a specialized engagement for clergy and facilitate the dissemination of relevant Cambridge Colloquium materials.

1.5 Looking Ahead
The Karatina University forum strengthened BioCosmos Kenya’s institutional engagement while demonstrating the value of interdisciplinary academic platforms in examining questions relating to science, origins, information and complexity.
BioCosmos Kenya looks forward to building on this engagement through further interdisciplinary forums, research collaboration, faculty development and student activities at Karatina University and across the Central Region.
