The BioCosmos Kenya has lined up several activities including public lectures at various Universities in Kenya from Monday, 7th March 2022 to Friday, 11th March 2022 which will culminate in the BioCosmos Conference at Grand Winston Hotel, Nakuru from the evening of 11th March 2022 to 13th March 2022. Participants for the forthcoming conference are drawn from various institutions and organizations in Kenya.

Renowned and experienced speakers drawn from USA and Norway who include Dr. Paul A. Nelson (Discovery Institute, USA), Prof. Kjell Tveter (BioCosmos Africa/Norway) and Dag Kr. Norli (Chair & CEO BioCosmos Africa/Norway) will present lectures on various topics such as:

  1. Introduction to World views and the concept of Intelligent Design
  2. The Mystery of Metamorphosis
  3. How Large Is the Genetic Universe?
  4. The Explanatory Promise of Design Triangulation

The conference will provide a platform for scholars to have a discourse on the concept of Intelligent Design and need to teach ID in Universities, Secondary and Primary Schools in Kenya and Africa. The conference will further create an avenue for networking and future engagements.

The main mandate of BioCosmos Africa & BioCosmos Kenya is to advance the understanding that human beings and nature are the result of intelligent design rather than undirected processes.  Intelligent Design (ID) theory postulates that many features of nature are best explained by Intelligent cause because in our experience, intelligence is the cause of their informational properties”.

 Aspects of Intelligent Design:

  • Intelligent design — often called “ID” — is a scientific theory that holds that the emergence of some features of the universe and living things is best explained by an intelligent cause rather than an undirected process such as natural selection
  • Proponents of neo-Darwinian evolution contend that the information in life arose via purposeless, blind, and unguided processes
  • ID proponents argue that this information arose via purposeful, intelligently guided processes. Both claims are scientifically testable using the standard methods of science
  • But ID theorists say that when we use the scientific method to explore nature, the evidence points away from unguided material causes, and reveals intelligent design.
  • ID theorists argue that design can be inferred by studying the informational properties of natural objects to determine if they bear the type of information that, in our experience, arises from an intelligent cause
  • ID is NOT merely a negative argument against evolution or a theory about the designer or the supernatural
  • ID is the science that studies signs of intelligence. Note that a sign is not the thing signified.
  • As a scientific research program, intelligent design investigates the effects of intelligence, NOT Intelligence as such (William Dembski, 2004)
  • The conclusion that something was designed can be made quite independent of knowledge of the designer. As a matter of procedure, the design must first be apprehended before there can be any further question about the designer
  • The inference to design can be held with all the firmness that is possible in this world, without knowing anything about the designer
  • ID is modest in what it attributes to the designing intelligence responsible for the specified complexity in nature
  • Design theorists recognise that the nature, moral character and purposes of this intelligence lie beyond the competence of science and must be left to religion and philosophy ID is not an argument for the existence of a benevolent GOD – This can be argued in philosophy and theology
  • The question of the identity of the designer is left open: God of the Bible, Krishna, Allah, An angel etc
  • ID theorists start by studying the type of information created by intelligent agents
  • Next, examine natural objects to establish whether they contain such information
  • When such information is found, it leads to the inference that an intelligent cause was at work in the origin of that object
  • Only an intelligent agent can use foresight to accomplish an end-goal

We look forward towards a fruitful engagement during the conference and we request the participants to access and watch the following videos before the day of the conference

Please click on the link below and start at 33.50 and watch till 1.18.30, less than 45 minutes. To watch this video will give you the basic information about Intelligent Design as well to get the utmost out of the lectures that will be given at the conference.

An introduction to Intelligent Design by Dr. Casey Luskin, Discovery Institute

Prof. Tveter is a Norwegian surgeon with vast experience of many decades. In his early years of clinical practice, he served for one year in Africa, at a missionary hospital in the province of Kivu, Congo. Prof. Tveter did pioneer research work on the prostate, leading to his Ph.D. He has been a professor of urology and general surgery for 23 years in Norway, and head of the Urological Department at various leading university hospitals. He has been teaching medical students, nurses, and mentoring colleagues to their academic thesis, and has had various engagements in the US universities as Visiting Professor.

Prof. Tveter has a Christian worldview. He has dedicated his retirement life to studying Human Origins. He has spent some thousand hours, reading books and working. He is the author of four books and recently presented a paper on “Evolution and Intelligent Design – Are they reconcilable?” during CSAK Regional Conference in Ruiru, Kenya and a public lecture on Intelligent Design in November 2019 at the University of Eldoret. The theory of intelligent design holds that certain features of the universe and of living things are best explained by an intelligent cause, not an undirected process such as natural selection. Prof. Kjell is a founder member of BioCosmos Africa.

Dr. Paul A. Nelson is currently a Senior Fellow of the Discovery Institute and Adjunct Professor in the Master of Arts Program in Science & Religion at Biola University. He is a philosopher of biology who has been involved in the intelligent design debate internationally for three decades. His grandfather, Byron C. Nelson (1893-1972), a theologian and author, was an influential mid-20th century dissenter from Darwinian evolution. After Paul received his B.A. in philosophy with a minor in evolutionary biology from the University of Pittsburgh, he entered the University of Chicago, where he received his Ph.D. (1998) in the philosophy of biology and evolutionary theory. His research interests include the relationship between developmental biology and our knowledge of the history of life, the theory of intelligent design, and the interaction of science and theology. Paul lectures frequently at colleges and universities throughout the United States and Europe, has spoken on American and Italian national public radio, and written for popular publications as varied as the Oslo Dagbladet and the Christian Research Journal.

Nelson’s scholarly articles have appeared in journals such as Biology & Philosophy, BIO-Complexity, Zygon, Rhetoric and Public Affairs, and Touchstone, and book chapters in the anthologies Mere Creation (Intervarsity Press), Signs of Intelligence (Brazos), Intelligent Design Creationism and Its Critics (MIT Press), and Darwin, Design, Public Education (Michigan State University Press), and Next Generation Systematics (Cambridge University Press). Paul is one of the authors of the biology textbook Explore Evolution, and has appeared in several films on intelligent design for Illustra Media. He is a member of the Society for Developmental Biology (SDB) and the International Society for the History, Philosophy, and Social Studies of Biology (ISHPSSB).
